(You'll still need Illustrator for that.) You can add bevels, drop shadows, and many other swell effects to both text and vector objects, but most of them require you to use a huge dialog box that obscures almost half the screen. For example, you can't draw a meandering line across the page and make text adhere to that line.

A new text warping feature does a great job of molding text around part of an object, but you can't write text on a path. Text remains editable so long as it is in vector format. This version offers on-canvas text editing, just as almost every $50 image editor does-you can now just place your cursor on the canvas and start typing. With Photoshop 6.0, text is easier to implement, too. You cannot export graphics as Illustrator or EPS files, but Illustrator will recognize vector objects saved as Photoshop files. The results are what you'd expect with a vector graphic: Text looks supersharp at any size. But just as you adapt to a different set of options when you switch to Illustrator, you'll eventually learn which tools you can use in Photoshop. That limitation can be extremely frustrating, especially when you first use the new version-the application will pummel you with error messages saying, "The content of the layer is not directly editable." (In contrast, Adobe Illustrator doesn't offer a paintbrush, so you're not tempted.) In fact, all text in Photoshop 6.0 comes in as vector format to apply paint, or even a filter, you must convert the text to bitmap format (and before you can access the command to convert, the application slows you down by requiring you to "commit" to placing the text). But some of the program's tools don't work on vectors for example, you still can't use a paintbrush on a vector object. Photoshop 6.0 allows you to create both vector shapes (rectangles, ellipses, and other forms, as well as freehand objects) and vector-based text. The line in the sand between vector and bitmap images still exists, but the new version of Photoshop blurs it a little. To increase the size of a bitmap image, on the other hand, you must create more pixels, which increases the file size. As a result, vector images aren't limited by resolution-they can scale to almost any size without becoming jaggy. To make a vector image, an application creates a mathematical formula to define it, rather than composing a layout with lots of dots (pixels). The vector format offers several advantages over the bitmap format in terms of creating and viewing images. We tested a beta version the $609 product ships in late September. The new Photoshop 6.0, however, borrows a few vector tricks from its kin.

Adobe Photoshop has long been the graphics tool of choice for editing bitmap (pixel-based) images, while its cousin Adobe Illustrator has held favor as a professional tool for drawing resolution-independent vector graphics.
